Easy Summer Craft Series - DIY Blackboards

As the first in my {easy summer craft} series I wanted to share this adorable DIY blackboard idea. Not only would it be cute as decor for your kitchen, but a perfect party decor element to include for a backyard bbq, a school themed party, a summer picnic, or brunch at home.

You can transform any object with a flat, smooth surface into a blackboard. Here, enamel bakeware was used, but you can make use of anything that strikes your fancy, such as an old mirror or a salvaged window.

Directions: Apply two coats of chalkboard paint using a small sponge applicator or roller, as the fibers in regular paintbrushes tend to leave behind streaks. Chalkboard paint comes in both liquid and spray versions. If you try the spray, be sure to cover the surrounding area carefully to prevent spatter.

Rain Boots as Centerpieces

I love to see ideas that are completely out of the box - using something that you already have around the house for a reason other than what the intended purpose is.
Isn't that what creativity is all about?!

How about using some adorable rain boots as vases for your centerpiece decor? It would
be easy to keep your colors within your color scheme and you could even center them
around a theme; froggy boots, pink polka-dot boots, or yellow fireman boots. They even
have adorable Mary Jane rain boots that would be just perfect for a baby shower.
Hmmm, I definitely am inspired!

Tip: if using fresh flowers, then put the party flowers in a vase or jar before putting them in the boot. If you are using silk flowers, you can just stick them in or place a piece of florist foam in the boot to hold the flowers.

Cupcakes with Cookie Toppers

I think this might be just one of the cutest ideas ever!

Glory from Glorious Treats made these darling cookies for her daughter's candy-themed birthday party! What I love though, is that she used the lollipop cookies as cupcake toppers (as shown in the second photo) - so creative Glory!

You can head over to Glorious Treats blog to see the entire party...the invitations, games, prizes, sweet shop, decor and more!

The Sweetest Summer Treat - Ice Cream at Your Party

Wouldn't it be fun to have your very own old-time ice cream cart/truck at your wedding or special event! Every time I hear the sound of the ice cream truck it conjures up such nostaligic feelings. Everyone loves ice cream, and I know your guests would be delighted if you treated them to a old-fashioned yummy ice cream cone while enjoying a favorite childhood tradition!

{Real Party} Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Parlour

I am in love with this Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Parlour "Make Your Own Sundae"
design concept that I found on Eat Drink Chic. EDC is truly one of my favorite inspiration blogs, and the presentation of this design is off the charts with creativity!

The idea of a make your own sundae bar adds an element of creativity and fun to your party
and is really so easy to do! Below you'll find all the details, sources, DIY tips and templates you'll need recreate this party for your celebration!

Ice-Cream and Whipped Cream:
Use a metal tub with ice to contain the ice-cream and whipped cream. Having someone serve these items may be quicker and easier if that is an option. For a wedding or larger party you may want to consider having some form of refrigeration, but for a simpler smaller party, a tub of ice would work just fine.

Old Fashioned Ice-Cream Sundae Dishes:
You can purchase old-fashioned sundae fountainware from many home goods store, or perhaps you are fortunate enough to own or find an antique set at a local thrift store. Either way, these beautiful pink hued ice-cream dishes shown above were used for toppings, instead of being used to serve the ice-cream. Great creativity!

To keep the topping color palette soft pink and white these toppings include coconut, mints and mini marshmallows. Let your imagine decide what toppings you use!

Maraschino Cherries:
It's not a sundae if it doesn't have a cherry on top! I love they way they presented them on square white plates altogether with their stems sticking up. They look gorgeous and it adds another creative touch!

Sauce Toppings:
Toppings were displayed in little clear glass jars, but any really nice old-fashioned pitcher would work well too. Ideas for toppings include chocolate, caramel, strawberry, and butterscotch. If you have the means to keep it warm you could add some hot fudge too!

Cookie Jar:
Inside the big old-fashioned cookie jar where crushed peanuts and almond flakes.

Wafers in Straw Dispenser:
A straw dispenser is used to hold vanilla wafers - another great creative touch!

Meringues:
The white meringues were displayed on a long rectangular flat white dish lined with coordinating pink paper.

Paper Cups:
Take any standard 9 oz. white cup from a party supply store and cover them with your choice of either the argyle or striped pattern. Tip: print onto plain white paper. Wrap the paper around the cup and stick down with glue or double sided tape.

Mini Popcorn Cup for Spoons:
Cute little pastel pink and yellow plastic ice-creams spoons were stored inside a DIY mini popcorn container. Wooden paddles are also very cute and would work well; and those can even be personalized too. Use scalloped edge scissors to cut around the top of the container.

Tip: Use a cast coated (high-gloss) paper which is not easily printable so firstly print out onto plain white paper, cute out the template with scalpel and trace around the edges onto the card. Use a scalpel to cut out.

Paddle Stick Topping Labels:
Purchase jumbo paddle sticks at any local craft store and attach the circular labels to them with glue or double sided tape.

Additional Note: These templates are completely editable. The editable font used is Ecuyer DAX, which is downloaded from Dafont. It is entirely an uppercase font so if you type without caps lock on the font will be slightly smaller. Type in your own titles and print out onto white card stock.

Thank you to Eat Drink Chic for this fabulous party!
